Stanford Stud of Highland Ponies

Owner: Mr David Allonby

The History of Our Stud

The Stud was founded in 1969 - following the purchase in 1968 of two geldings, which turned out to be Highlands. In 1969 the colt Glenorchy of Kier was purchased, then foundation mare Broadshade Sunlight was purchased from Miss Richie the well known Highland breeder in 1970.

During the 1970’s a number of ponies came from the Glenbuckie Stud of Iain McVicar. With the dispersal of ponies from the Department of Agriculture (the Knocknagael Stud in Inverness) the opportunity was taken to put in an offer for three mares in foal. These all came to Stanford in the spring of 1978.

After the death of Glenorchy a replacement stallion was required and Cameron was loaned to the Stud by our friend Alston Arbuckle (who owned the Lundie and Gowrie Studs.) Cameron spent some time with us and was successful in hand and was then broken to saddle and had a very successful summer of showing. Following the death of Alston Arbuckle, Cameron was purchased and became a resident stallion at Stanford in the spring of 1979.

At New year 1981 the stud suffered a tragic loss with the death of its founder Mrs Olwen Allonby.

The previous spring two foals were born a filly and a colt. I had to take advice on whether the colt should be cut, my friend Iain McVicar advised that he should be kept entire. What good judgement: that colt was Dallas of Stanford.

Throughout 1980 the ponies bred and brought on by Olwen continued to win and at many of the major shows Cameron, Rose of Knocknagael and Maureen of Knocknagael were among the most constant performers.

From the mid 1980's a number of ponies bred at the stud Shuna of Stanford, Stroma of Stanford and Dalmally of Stanford were keeping the flag flying and producing good results at the shows both in hand and under saddle.

From 1990 to the present day we have had many show successes at many of the major English shows. Both Inhand and undersaddle with Craig of Culblean, Dalmaccallum of Stanford and Kirk of Glenbuckie, who as our new resident stallion (following the death of his sire Cameron).

Home bred ponies and other quality Highland Ponies are always available.
